On Thursday, July 3, 2025, the atmosphere at GVA Basic School was filled with excitement as students trooped to the polls to elect their new school prefects. A total of 789 students cast their votes to choose among 14 candidates who had earlier presented compelling manifestos. The electoral process was organized under the able leadership of Ms. Justa Asabiy, who served as the head of the school’s electoral committee.
Ms. Asabiy explained that the school adopted the simple majority voting system, where the candidate with the highest number of votes in each category is declared the winner. The event was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner, reflecting the students’ growing understanding of democratic values.
Benefits to Learners and the School:
Civic Education and Democratic Values
Students gained firsthand experience in democratic participation, helping them understand the importance of voting, fairness, and leadership.
Leadership Development
The elections offered candidates the opportunity to develop confidence, public speaking, and leadership skills, qualities that will serve them throughout life.
Critical Thinking and Decision Making
Learners had to analyze manifestos, compare ideas, and make informed decisions, enhancing their reasoning and evaluative skills.
Peaceful Coexistence and Respect for Rules
The peaceful nature of the exercise taught students to respect rules, outcomes, and the opinions of others and key values in any learning environment.
School Unity and Participation
The entire process fostered school spirit and inclusiveness, as both candidates and voters felt a sense of belonging and responsibility toward school governance.
The 2025 GVA student elections were not just about selecting leaders. They were a living lesson in responsibility, democracy, and the power of the student voice.
Our special thank you for this successful election goes to the hardworking staff of GVA, the PTA chairlady & parents who spent their precious time observing the whole event.
